The Band, Australia's greatest ever rock quartet originated in the tough, working class suburbs of Elizabeth, about twenty kilometers north of Adelaide. Elizabeth in the sixties was a place where a large number of Australia's influx of World War Two migrates seemed to finish up. They were so many different nationalities and minority groups in the area; it was probably the most multi-cultural region in the world.

In the rough and at times violent district of Elizabeth where pub regulars would usually brawl long after closing time, The Bands music was popular among these drunken patrons primarily because they had little alternative in the style of music.
