Summary:   This essay is a language analysis of "A Farewell to Arms" by Ernest Hemingway.


In the first chapter of A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway uses imagery to express his negative opinion of war disrupting a peaceful setting.

The countryside setting is a picture of a peaceful and beautiful place, interrupted and destroyed by the presence of soldiers and the war that is taking place. For example, in this passage, Hemingway mentions the plain, rich with crops, and the orchards of fruit trees. This description illustrates the simplicity and purity of the small village. Hemingway's portrayal of the village being so quiet and natural creates a scene of innocence. In addition, Hemingway comments on the view of the mountains, and the clear, blue water of the river, moving swiftly through the channels. Both of these landmarks are associated with serenity.
