City (pop., 2006 est.: 1,342,262) and port, east-central Honshu, Japan. It lies on Tokyo Bay, between Tokyo and Yokohama.

Almost completely destroyed in World War II, it has since been rebuilt. It is a major industrial centre for machinery and chemicals manufacturing and has large shipbuilding facilities. It is the site of a 12th-century Buddhist temple.
