Vincent, southwest of Adelaide, Kangaroo Island is 90 mi (145 km) long with an area of 1,680 sq mi (4,350 sq km). Visited in 1802 by the English explorer Matthew Flinders, it was named for its many kangaroos. Nepean Bay was the site of the state's first temporary settlement in 1836.
