City (pop., 2003 est.: 2,229,706), Indonesia. It is the capital of West Java (Jawa Barat) province and was founded by the Dutch in 1810 in the interior of Java on a 2,400-ft (730-m) plateau.

It is surrounded by beautiful scenery. Bandung is the centre of cultural life for the Sundanese, who compose most of West Java's population and differ in customs and language from their Javanese neighbours. It is also a centre for the study and preservation of Sundanese culture and an educational centre.
