In Classical Latin, ultima is the superlative form of the adjective ulter, ultra, ultrum (respectively masculine, feminine, and neuter singular forms) whose comparative form is ulterior for the masculine and feminine genders, and ulterius for the neuter. As a superlative, it denotes very great distance in translation, as in being on the farthest point or place of something, said often of geographically remote lands. The opposite of ultimus, ultima, ultimum is proximus, proxima, proximum. Etymologically, ultimus is probably not related to the past participle of ulciscor (take vengeance on), ultus (avenged).
