a nickname for the Old Man of the Mountain, a New Hampshire rock formation that collapsed in 2003
The Great Stone Face is also referred to in the Og Mandino book The Return of the Ragpicker as a geological phenomenon - a mountain of granite stone etched by nature in the shape of a man's face. In Mandino's book he mentions the rock's famous link with Hawthorne, then adds that Daniel Webster spoke of it too. "Men hang out signs indicative of their respective trades; shoemakers hang out a gigantic shoe, jewelers, a monster watch; and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth. But up in the mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sing to show that there He makes men!"
