His kinsman Gnaeus Pompeius became consul in 89 BC and played a prominent part in the Social War until his death. This man's son was the famous Pompey the Great, sometime son-in-law and ally and later enemy of Julius Caesar. The name Pompeia was borne by various women of the gens Pompeius:
