Most of the said cathedrals were built during the reigns of Alexander II of Russia and/or Alexander III of Russia in order to commemorate their "salvation from the hands of villains", i.e., from assassination attempts. The nine-domed cathedral in Moscow, although started during the reign of Nicholas II (in 1911), was also dedicated to Alexander II's patron saint, because its purpose was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the emancipation of the serfs by Alexander II.
