What is known today as Thomas Chandler Haliburton's The Clockmaker series began as a group of sketches entitled “Recollections of Nova Scotia.” This series of twenty-one sketches appeared anonymously in the Novascotian, or Colonial Herald, a weekly newspaper published in Halifax by Joseph Howe. The weekly instalments of “Recollections of Nova Scotia” ran from Wednesday, 23 September 1835 to Thursday, 11 February 1836. The Novascotian was published on Wednesday “for the Country” and on Thursday “for the Town.” Each sketch appeared in both the Wednesday and Thursday printings of the weekly.
