On the 9th of February, 1930, after six years of separation from his home and family, Unamuno returned at last to Spain with the fall of the Primo de Rivera dictatorship. The unhappy period of exile seemed to precipitate for Unamuno a problem which had existed beneath the thematic concerns of a major portion of his writing up to that time.
