His account generated intense interest in this new territory, both among Americans and Europeans; an English edition was published in 1811, followed by translations in French, Dutch, and German. Although Pike was later suspected of being involved with Aaron Burr and Gen. James Wilkinson in their conspiracy to establish an empire in the Southwest, he successfully defended his innocence, continuing to rise through the military ranks until he was killed in battle in 1813.
Zebulon Montgomery Pike was born on 5 January 1779 in Somerset County, New Jersey, to Zebulon and Isabella (née Brown) Pike. His father had served in the Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of captain. Isabella Brown was the daughter of James Brown, who had also served as an officer in the Revolutionary War and later became a prominent landholder. When the war ended and Pike's father was discharged, he moved his family to Pennsylvania, first to a farm in Bucks County and then to land on Bald Eagle Creek. No records exist of Pike's school attendance during his childhood years, though some scholars have suggested that he attended school and received private lessons from a mathematician named Mr.
