Farley is a leader in the field of books about horses, sharing his popularity possibly only with Marguerite Henry and Lynn Hall. They have each written about several different horses, but Farley has maintained his place with numerous books about two stallions and their foals. Farley's popularity has continued despite the fact that many librarians and literary critics have given his books mostly mediocre or poor reviews. Young people the world over appreciate Farley's books and continue to read them.
Though he has reported various birth dates, according to Who's Who in 1974, Walter Farley was born on 26 June 1920, in Syracuse, New York. From a very early age he had a passion for horses which had to be satisfied in fantasy world until he was grown and financially able to secure a horse of his own. It was not possible for his family to buy a horse for him and even more impossible to keep a horse at home. When the family moved from Syracuse to New York City in 1931, Farley was sent to the Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania. There he was encouraged to continue the writing about horses that he had been doing since the age of eleven.
