Walter Lorimer Farley created the Black Stallion, one of the most famous real or fictional horses of all time, over forty years ago, and that horse is still running at the head of the race. The original Black Stallion book appeared in 1941 and has been followed by thirteen sequels; in one the Black Stallion meets Flame, the Island Stallion, another of Farley's horses that is almost as famous. There are four titles in the Island Stallion series, including one in which the Island Stallion and the Black Stallion meet. All of these books are still in print in hardback editions and together have sold approximately ten million copies, and all of these books have been published in paperback editions, which has added greatly to their popularity. Some of the Black Stallion books have been republished more than thirty times, and some have been published in at least fifteen foreign countries.
