Dictionary of Literary Biography on Walter Dean Myers (page 3)

Published in 1972, Myers's first fairy tale, The Dragon Takes a Wife, chronicles the misadventures of Harry, a dragon living in Lyraland, who, aided by Mabel Mae (a contemporary black fairy whom he later marries), overcomes a knight. Fly, Jimmy, Fly (1974), Myers's fourth children's book, tells of Jimmy who yearns to fly like the birds circling high above the cluttered maze of the city. Although discouraged by his mother, Jimmy persists, until he learns to fly in his imagination.

Other children's picture books include Brainstorm (1977), a science-fiction tale, and The Black Pearl and the Ghost (1980) and The Golden Serpent (1980), both set in the mysterious East. The Black Pearl and the Ghost consists of two mystery stories--one concerning Dr. Aramy and Mr. Uppley, spoofs of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, who solve the mystery of a stolen pearl, and the other concerning Mr. Dibble, a ghost chaser, who rids Lord Bleek's manor of a troublesome spirit. The Golden Serpent tells of Pundabi, a wise man, who is summoned by the king to solve a mystery and tells the king that he has lost his Golden Serpent. While searching for it, the king views the poverty and degradation in his kingdom and returns in disgust to his palace; Pundabi doubts that the king will ever find the serpent, which symbolizes goodness and compassion.
