He then went to teach at the Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines, Iowa, where he stayed for forty-five years, eventually becoming vice-president. Hume's mother, Mary Evalina McMullin Carothers of Burlington, Iowa, descended from Scotch-Irish forebears who were mostly farmers and artisans as well. Mary Carothers's family had a strong musical background, which might explain her son's deep appreciation for music. Wallace Hume Carothers, the only scientist in his family, was the eldest of four siblings. One sister, Isobel, was a particular favorite of his. She became a star on the radio as Lu in the musical trio of Clara, Lu, and Em. Her death in 1936 was a loss from which Carothers never recovered.
Carothers began his education in the public schools of Des Moines, Iowa. As a boy he was recognized for his thoroughness in his schoolwork and exhibited an aptitude for experimenting with machines and working with his hands. Graduating from the North High School in 1914, he entered his father's school, the Capital City Commercial College, that fall. He completed the accountancy curriculum at an accelerated pace, graduating in 1915. In September of the same year, he enrolled at Tarkio College in Missouri to pursue courses in science as well as to assist teaching in the accounting department.
