In 1990 she was named by
Glamour magazine as one of its top ten college women; later, she became a contributing editor to that magazine. She has also worked for or written for a number of other publications.
As an adult she has made efforts to maintain a good relationship with her mother, who sometimes felt that the socioeconomic differences between the two made it difficult for them to remain close. "I really had to work hard to try and pull her in to the choices I made, to ask her opinion even if it's just a judgment call, so that she didn't feel shut out," Chambers told the interviewer for Women's Link. Because her mother, she asserted, had supported her writing of a very revealing memoir about their family's life in Brooklyn, the writing and publication of the book became easier experiences for its author. In addition to her mother, Chambers named as role models writers Toni Morrison, Adrienne Rich, and Mary Gordon and Essence magazine editor Susan Taylor.
