She was, however, an avid reader. "I read a lot from about age seven onwards," she told AAYA. "I used to go to the public library every week and bring home a stack of books to read. A librarian there, Mrs. Carney, took me under her wing and set aside a book for me each week. She gently directed me towards all kinds of things. My favorites were the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, the Walter R. Brooks 'Freddy the Pig' series, everything by Zylpha Keatley Snyder (The Egypt Game, A Season of Ponies), Madeleine L'Engle (Arm of the Starfish, A Wrinkle in Time), Joan Aiken (The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, etc.), the 'Dark Is Rising' series by Susan Cooper, the 'Book of Three' series by Lloyd Alexander, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and C.S.
