Tony Kushner burst onto the international stage in the early 1990s with the critical success of his two-part Angels in America. Already established as a director, adaptor, and playwright working in regional theaters prior to Angels in America, Kushner found himself thrust into the forefront of American drama. He has also emerged as a national spokesman for several social causes as a result of both the international acclaim and controversy that has accompanied Angels in America. Consisting of two long plays, Millennium Approaches ( performed in 1990) and Perestroika (1991), Angels in America is a complex portrait of life in the United States during Ronald Reagan's presidency. It presents that era as a critical transitional period in the history of the nation--a time that raised complicated questions about the future of American society, particularly in the areas of morality, politics, and sexuality. In Angels in America, as in many of his other plays, Kushner questions the American brand of morality in a nation of diverse and often conflicted views and values.
