Later volumes of this edition are notable not only for the most reliable text that can be achieved by scientific method but also for the high quality of the introductions to the various volumes and for the systematic identification of the sources used by Aquinas. A fifty-volume set of concordances and indices produced by R. Busa with the collaboration of IBM, the
Index Thomisticus (1974-1980), has transformed Thomistic research by listing in alphabetical order every word of every work, set out in boldface type in the sentence in which it occurs with a full reference to the best available edition of the work. While the Leonine Edition and the Busa index are in Latin, the most significant works of Aquinas are available in most international modern languages: Italian, Spanish, French, German, English, Dutch, and the rest.
Biographical and bibliographical data on Aquinas derive principally from documents associated with his canonization by the Roman Catholic church. This step entailed a legal investigation of his life and virtues, testimony under oath by knowledgeable witnesses, and finally, a judgment by the Roman See. There were two legal processes, one at Naples in 1319 and one in 1321 at Fossanova, where he had died.
