Nelson's books continue to feature protagonists from eleven to thirteen years old because "I just keep feeling drawn to the intense emotion--the conflict and comedy and tenderness of those years."
Nelson attended college at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. There, she was active in theatre and involved in numerous plays. She met Cooney, her future husband, in one of these plays. The couple married in 1968, and their first son, Michael, was born the next year. While Nelson continued her studies at the university, she worked as both as an actress and a creative dramatics teacher at the Theatre Under the Stars.
