Authors and Artists for Young Adults on Sylvia Louise Engdahl (page 2)

"Though people in the children's literature field usually describe me as a science fiction author, that's not quite accurate according to how people in the science fiction field look at it," Engdahl explained in a speech at the June 1990 conference of the Children's Literature Association in San Diego, California, published on-line at http://www.sylviaengdahl.com. "In terms of publishing and reviewing categories, my books weren't initially issued in that field, and while some of them--especially the 'Star' trilogy--are enjoyed by adult SF fans, I have always tried to make them intelligible to a general audience."

It seems clear that there are undeniable elements of both genres in Engdahl's work. At her Web site she explains, "I write about space and other worlds because I believe that expansion into space is essential to human survival, and that how people feel about the universe beyond Earth is therefore becoming more and more crucial."

The picture of Engdahl that emerges from her own writings and from the few media interviews that are available is one of a woman who is uncomfortable with many aspects of the literary world, and with the demands of writing for the mass market.
