"Being a writer is really easy," author Susan Beth Pfeffer told AAYA as her fat cat Louisa purred on her lap. "I wrote my first book during my final semester at New York University. I was twenty years old, taking seventeen credits and nearly flunking one class, having extensive dental work done, and pursuing the normal social life of anyone living in New York City in 1968. With all that I found time to write a book in one semester. I wrote five pages a day five days a week. I worked with the refrigerator behind me and reached back without knowing what I was grabbing just so I could keep working. I ate a lot of hot dogs. One of the real advantages of hating school was that I got real self-disciplined." Ever since that hectic year when she wrote Just Morgan, Pfeffer has published at least one book for young teenagers each year.
