After the release of only three films, Spike Lee has become one of the most provocative young filmmakers to emerge in the late '80s. "I truly believe I was put here to make films, it's as simple as that. I'm doin' what I'm 'posed to be doin'. It's ¬ for me to say whether ['She's Gotta Have It'] is a landmark film (I make 'em, that's all) but I do want people to be inspired by it, in particular, black people. Now there is a present example of how we can produce. We can do the things we want to do, there are no mo' excuses. We're all tired of that alibi, 'White man this, white man that.' ... It's on us.
