Choi was born in Pyongyang, North Korea, in 1937. She once commented, "I have always loved books. As a young girl growing up in Korea, I loved collecting books. I loved the feel and the smell of books; I liked the sound of pages turning; and I liked arranging them on my bookshelf. Sitting under the trellis of grapevines in our backyard, I would sit and read for hours as I snacked on the bitter green grapes. Through books, I could travel to the far corners of the world and meet people from distant lands and cultures. Through books, I could even travel through time.
