Time, Stefan Kanfer noted the signature of the Dr. Seuss style: "looping, free-style drawings; clanging, infectious rhymes; and a relentless logic." Because of his work in publishing books for young readers and for the many innovative children's classics he wrote himself, Seuss "had a tremendous impact," Miles Corwin of the
Los Angeles Times declared, "on children's reading habits and the way reading is taught and approached in the school system."
Writing in Children Today, Mary Lystad commented that some critics and librarians "fault Dr. Seuss' distaste for the common-place and his savoring of lighthearted fantasy spiced with a dash of anarchy." He was, for example, the first writer to have a character--Yertle the Turtle--burp in the pages of a children's book.
