The Outsiders took me a year and a half. During that time, I did four complete drafts. The first draft was forty pages; then I just kept rewriting and adding details."
2 While Hinton' first book was acclaimed by book critics and applauded by teenagers, many parents objected to the characters' unruly and often violent nature. Some adults became concerned that the storyline might encourage teens to idolize a life of lawlessness and destruction, while others felt it was wrong for young people to be exposed to violence in literature under any circumstances. "... There was no realistic fiction being written for teenagers. It was all Mary Jane goes to the prom, that kind of stuff. I'd been to a few proms and they weren't anything like that. There weren't any books that dealt realistically with teenage life so I wrote The Outsiders to fill that gap."3
