Many philosophers consider Saul Kripke to be among the most important contributors to the subject in the twentieth century. Particularly during three phases of exceptional productivity that he has characterized as "golden" periods--1956 to 1958 (when he was still in high school), 1962 to 1964, and 1972 to 1975--he has done groundbreaking work in most major areas of philosophy. His seminal papers and books have overturned received views and redefined and rejuvenated philosophy of language, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, and philosophical logic.
