Dictionary of Literary Biography on Roch Carrier (page 2)

His first full-length book, a volume of short stories, Jolis deuils, petites tragédies pour adultes (1964), won the Prix Littéraire de la Province de Québec. With La Guerre, Yes Sir! (1968), his first and best-known novel, he began to have work published at the rhythm of almost a book a year. Sheila Fischman translated La Guerre, Yes Sir! for Anansi in 1970 and has translated seven subsequent books, making Carrier one of the most widely read Quebec writers in English Canada. In 1970 Carrier left teaching to become secretary-general of the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. La Guerre, Yes Sir! was adapted for the stage that year and after a successful European tour was played in an English translation at the Stratford Festival in 1972. Carrier has adapted two other novels for the stage, Floralie, for Théâtre du Nouveau Monde in 1974, and Il n'y a pas de pays sans grand-père, for Théâtre Port Royal, in 1978. He has also written a monologue, La Céleste Bicyclette, produced in 1979 at Café de la Place, Montreal, and provided scenarios for several National Film Board films: Le Martien de Noël (1970), The Ungrateful Land (1972), and The Hockey Sweater (1980).
