White has claimed he did not learn anything in the American public schools he attended during his childhood: "I managed to be promoted to the eighth grade without learning anything at all," he wrote in his
SAAS essay. Finally, while living in Virginia, White was sent to the Episcopal High School at Alexandria, "a school which intended to
teach people things. I had decided when I was thirteen that I was going to be a writer and the Episcopal High School introduced me to Latin and English literature, to history and geography. I think they tried to teach me other things such as math, chemistry, physics, but I couldn't see why a writer would need to know that sort of stuff, so I didn't pay much attention," White continued.
After high school, White was admitted to the U.S.
