I'm a pretty good actor, a pretty good writer. I have pretty good music abilities, pretty good visual and color and costume sense. I'm not great at any of these things, but as a director I have the opportunity to utilize all these things in one job. Which is why I like doing it."
Life among the Comedians
Reiner actually started his career by writing for and acting in television comedies, which isn't surprising considering the household in which he grew up. The oldest of three children, Reiner was born in 1947 in the Bronx, where his family lived in a modest apartment while his father worked first on the stage and then on the memorable comedy variety program, Your Show of Shows. The young Reiner was constantly surrounded by his father's friends, brilliant comedians and comediennes like Mel Brooks, Sid Caesar, Norman Lear, Imogene Coca, Howard Morris, Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart, and Buddy Hackett, some of whom even spent time babysitting Carl's son. Yet even though young Reiner was surrounded by laughter, to his father he seemed to be a sullen child whose most creative efforts involved writing depressing poetry.
