Matheson was born in Allendale, New Jersey, and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, then attended the University of Missouri to study journalism. While in college, Matheson first became a "published" writer when his music reviews appeared in the campus magazine Columbian Missourian. After college, he took a job as a linotype operator and wrote short stories at night. When his stories began selling regularly to magazines in the late 1940s, Matheson made the commitment to became a freelance writer. He lives with his wife, Ruth, in Woodland Hills, California; the couple has four grown children.
In 1961 Matheson drew on his military background to write The Beardless Warriors, a novel set during World War II and focusing on young, inexperienced U.S.
