Despite Wells's reticence to discuss her family, critics have learned some basic information about her early life. Wells was born in 1952 in Rapides, Louisiana. She was raised in central Louisiana, where her father was a self-employed businessman running a plantation owned by his family since 1795. From an early age, Wells was a voracious reader, storyteller, and performer, and as a child she produced plays using friends and relatives as fellow cast members. She attended Catholic schools, and after high school she attended Louisiana State University, where she received a B.A. in English in 1970. Following college graduation, Wells traveled the country extensively and studied with Allen Ginsberg at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Wells's childhood acting experiences eventually led to a career as an actress, playwright, and novelist. To pursue acting, she moved to New York City and studied with Maurine Holbert-Hogaboom, who taught the Stanislavsky method. This method of acting stresses the importance of learning a role by acquiring the internal characteristics of the character rather than just the external movements.
