Martinez would walk three miles to watch his brother pitch for an amateur team. When Ramon signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pedro carried his equipment bag to every practice. "Just to see professional ball players in the Dominican was special, but to be on the same field was a dream," Martinez told
USA Today. "I used to dream that some day, my brothers and I would be in the major leagues together."
Family is the most important thing in Martinez's life. "When one of the family isn't around, it's like something is missing," he revealed to Sports Illustrated. "In the winter, when we, say, go to the beach, the brothers and sisters go together. We do everything together. That's why pitching with Ramon would be so great for our family."
Dream Come True
The Martinez brothers had a dream come true when the Los Angeles Dodgers also signed the 16-year-old Pedro to a contract. The Dodgers called Ramon up for good in 1989, while Pedro spent several years pitching in the minor leagues. Ramon Martinez had a great year with the Dodgers in 1990, going 20-6 with a 2.92 earned run average (ERA).
