Award-winning writer and artist Paul Chadwick has acquired a cult following for his series of hip science fiction comic books about the bulky erstwhile human being named Concrete. In his former life Concrete was Ron Lithgow, a speech writer for a U.S. Senator, but aliens transplanted his brain into a huge, indestructible body of living rock when they abducted him from a weekend camping trip. Unlike traditional superheroes, the dispassionate Concrete does not wear tights or have a secret identity. He does try to behave righteously, however, and he can perform feats impossible for common mortals. He uses his incredible size and strength to battle evil, sometimes in the form of greedy opportunists seeking to exploit the environment. "Concrete . . . lacks the normal needs and motives the rest of us have. He doesn't need to work to survive; he has very few of the normal human goals: finding a companion, marrying, raising a family, or even pursuing a career," Chadwick explained in an interview posted on the Dark Horse Comics Web site.
