In an autobiography published in 1982, Hearst recalled that her family's wealth helped her develop self-assurance: "I grew up in this affluent [wealthy] and sheltered environment sublimely self-confident," she wrote. "But we were never spoiled....What I remember most keenly about those years was my parents' strictness."
Hearst attended Catholic boarding schools as a girl. She graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Menlo Park, California, and then began high school at Santa Catalina School in Monterey, California. While she excelled in English and History, she received average grades in subjects she did not enjoy, such as French and Math. As a junior, she transferred to an exclusive day school in Hillsborough, the Crystal Springs School for Girls. Hearst's grades improved at Crystal Springs, and she graduated in June of 1971, one year ahead of the rest of her classmates.
While at Crystal Springs, Hearst was tutored by Steven Weed, a young teacher at the school. The two eventually moved in together and eventually became engaged. During Hearst's first year at Menlo College, she lived with Weed in an apartment two miles from campus. She earned all As and was named the school's best student of the year. After spending the summer in Europe, Hearst moved to Berkeley, California, where Weed had been awarded a teaching grant to pursue his graduate studies.
