The Ewing children and their father followed her over a period of years. Patrick came to America on January 11, 1975. "My coming to America fulfilled a lifelong dream of my mother," Ewing told
Time magazine. "She told us America is the land of opportunity. I enjoy being an American, but I still miss the natural beauty, the waterfalls and the landscapes of Jamaica."
Learns basketball
In Jamaica Ewing was the goalie on a soccer team and also played cricket. Until he arrived in America Ewing had never seen a basketball game, but liked the sport immediately. His height helped Ewing make his junior high team--he was six-feet-one inch and could dunk the basketball--he was clumsy on the court and unfamiliar with the plays. He made the varsity basketball team at Rindge and Latin High School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and started to polish his skills. "He was a hard worker, and if he didn't know something, he'd ask you a thousand times until he got it right," his high school coach Mike Jarvis told New York Newsday. "He became a star, the tall guy and great player, but he wasn't always a great player.
