Everyone has problems and tragedies that they try to overcome. No one would have blamed Oksana Baiul if she had given up, saying enough is enough. In an amazing story, Baiul refused to quit, despite many heartbreaking setbacks. A virtually unknown figure skater in 1992, Baiul tightened her skates and made history in 1993 when she won the World Figure Skating Championship on her first try. She then earned the gold medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, overcoming a serious injury she'd suffered during the competition. Just 17 years old, Baiul has already had more ups and downs in her life than most people will ever have.
Oksana Baiul was born November 16, 1977, in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. The Ukraine, formerly part of the Soviet Union, is about the size of Texas. Oksana wanted to be a ballet dancer, but she was chubby when she was young. To help her lose weight, her grandfather bought her a pair of ice skates.
