"To this day, I nearly always have to go back and
add material after my first draft," Aaseng wrote in
SAAS. A small child during elementary and junior high schools, Aaseng also had a stutter, two features that set him apart from the rest of the children in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and that made for a somewhat lonely schooling. His home environment provided the nurturing that he missed in school, however, and family camping trips were an integral part of his early years. Books were also important to Aaseng. "It is rare to meet an author who has not loved to read since early childhood," Aaseng noted in SAAS, "and I am no exception there. I was fortunate to have an older brother and sister to scout out a path through the library wilderness." Some of his earliest favorites were Big Red and Wild Trek by the outdoor writer Jim Kjelgaard, sports biographies by Milton Shapiro, and the "Freddy the Pig" books of Walter R. Brooks. Later, Aaseng's father introduced him to the "Chronicles of Narnia" by C. S. Lewis, a series of books that he rereads periodically even now.
