Magorian once commented, "In my mid-twenties, I became interested in reading children's novels. I had already written a story which was over a hundred pages long in which one of the main characters was a twelve-year-old girl. It was while reading the children's books that I suddenly realized that I wanted to write one. I expected it to take me until I was eighty to write one that would be accepted for publication. I was stunned when it happened fifty years earlier."
Writes Good Night, Mr. Tom
Magorian's first book, Good Night, Mr. Tom grew out of a short story about two characters: Tom, a reclusive widower, and Willie, a young boy sent to live with Tom during World War II when many children from London were sent to live in the countryside to escape the bombing raids by the German air force.
