According to Patrick Jones, a reviewer for
Horn Book, "Cadnum isn't offering simple tales of good and evil but complex stories written in simple yet tense prose about 'good kids' doing evil things."
The author of some of the most terrifying novels being published today also has a whimsical side, which was revealed during an interview with Authors and Artists for Young Adults (AAYA). Asked if he had any pets, Cadnum replied, "My current pet is a green and yellow parrot named Luke, who sometimes sits on my shoulder as I write and is one of my closest advisors." Cadnum grew up in Southern California. In the interview he recalled exploring the California shore: "My family spent a lot of time at the beach, the flat, sandy shore of Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. . . . Sometimes jellyfish washed up on shore, gigantic fried eggs with purple yolks. Sometimes there were sharks, cruising hammerheads the police tried to shoot from the pier. Late one afternoon everyone retreated from the water to watch a majestic dorsal fin slip majestically just beyond the breaking waves."
Cadnum had an early fascination with words.
