Like most kids their age, the characters in Marion Dane Bauer's novels have problems: Stacy, in Shelter from the Wind, doesn't get along with her stepmother, who, to make matters worse, is pregnant and is getting all of Stacy's father's attention. Stacy has thought about running away, yet when she actually does one day, it's on the spur of the moment when she's unprepared, both for her trek and for the surprising things she learns while out on her own. In Rain of Fire, Steve finds himself telling lies right and left. Sometimes it's to impress his friends or the new neighborhood bully, sometimes it's to protect his preferred notions about his older brother Matthew, a war veteran with "uncool" ideas about peace. Joel, in On My Honor, must find a way to live with the tragic consequences of foolish decisions he and his buddy Tony make during an afternoon of good-natured bickering and dare-devil challenges.
