Dictionary of Literary Biography on Lya Luft

In July 1980, amid the usual fanfare reserved for autograph parties for the publication of a new book, the publishing house Nova Fronteira in Rio de Janeiro introduced Lya Luft's novel As parceiras (The Players, or The Board Game). At the time Luft was already well-known in Brazilian literary circles as a gifted translator of German- and English-language fiction into Portuguese. In Pôrto Alegre, where she resided, she was also renowned for her essays and poetry published in the local newspapers and literary magazines. When asked why she turned to fiction, Luft explained to Claudia Nocchi in a 1980 interview: "duas coisas me levaran a escrever esse romance angustiado. Uma, assumir o lado trágico da vida.
