Dictionary of Literary Biography on Lupus of Ferrieres

Servatus Lupus of Ferrières spent much of his time in France and wrote nothing in German that has survived, but his role in German literature and culture, though small, is significant. He was born in Sens around 805; his mother, Frotildis, was a West Frank and his father, Antelm, a Bavarian; the German name Wulf presumably lies behind Lupus, and the name by which he is often known, Servatus, was added later. He entered the monastery at Ferrières, but around 828 he was sent to the monastery school at Fulda to study under Hrabanus Maurus. Lupus maintained an interest in the German language and may have written in it; in one of his letters he also affirmed the value of the Frankish (French) vernacular.
