In fact, according to Raymond J. Wilson in
Dictionary of Literary Biography, "much of Larry Niven's fiction reveals a love affair with technology." Niven also writes a hybrid of science fiction and fantasy, as in books such as
The Magic Goes Away, and in collaboration both individually and as a group with Jerry Pournelle and Stephen Barnes has created classic series and novels such as
Dream Park and
The Legacy of Heorot. As comfortable in the short story format as he is in novels, and in collaboration as he is in solo works, Niven and his work can be categorized only by one of the author's own personal "laws," as he stated in
Contemporary Authors Autobiography Series (
CAAS). "The only universal message in science fiction: There exist minds that think as well as you do, but differently."
Born in Los Angeles, Niven was raised in Beverly Hills and attended school both there and at the Cate School in Carpinteria. He flunked out of California Institute of Technology after, as he reported in CAAS, "discovering a bookstore jammed with used science fiction magazines." He subsequently graduated in mathematics from Washburn University in Kansas and did a year of graduate work in math at the University of California at Los Angeles before he finally decided to devote full time to writing.
