BANNED FROM THE LIBRARY. FOUL LANGUAGE. EXCESSIVE SEX. These are the kind of comments that are made by some librarians regarding Kevin Major's, gritty, coming-of-age novels. His writing has become controversial enough that in his native Canada, some libraries refuse to carry his work. On the other hand, many critics and readers heartily applaud his work, claiming that the situations he sets up are realistic and speak to modern young adults. Major stated in School Libraries in Canada that "Sex and strong language play no greater or no lesser a part in my work than they do in real life. The truth is both are preoccupations of adolescents as is their family life, school, their relationships with their friends. So why the great fear"" Major's champions appear to outweigh his critics. His first novel, Hold Fast, about a young boy trying to find his way in Newfoundland, has been compared favorably to J.D.
