When she was two, Krone rode a horse for the first time with her mom, and soon she would ride by herself. "I was a wild kid," she told
Ms. magazine. "I got bit, I got stepped on, I got kicked in the head. I got dumped [by the horse] five miles from home; the pony ran back and I had to walk."
When she was five, Krone was entering and winning horse shows where she was competing against riders up to 21 years old. After passing up a chance to join a circus, she decided she wanted to be a jockey. Her hero was Steve Cauthen, a teenaged jockey, who in 1978 rode the horse Affirmed to victories in all of the Triple Crown races. Krone also set her goals high. "I'm gonna be the greatest jock in the world," she wrote in her diary at age 15.
Starts racing
At 16, during spring vacation, Krone was given a job walking horses at Churchill Downs, the famous race track in Louisville, Kentucky, which is home to the Kentucky Derby. It soon became obvious that she knew how to handle horses, even though they were much bigger than she and were often hard to control.
