Today it is common practise for boys to leave the seminary and marry. At that time it was like a death in the family. I am sure he brought great shame on the family, after his extensive education and preparation for Holy Orders.
"On top of this humiliation came an even greater one. My mother was his first cousin. He had met her at a family picnic. The parish priest would not marry them because of this scourge, and they got on a train...and went back to Chicago where they were married by a justice of the peace. No Catholic then, especially a good Catholic, got married out of the church.
"I was in my late thirties before I found this out."2
"My mother and I were not close. I think she was very bitter about the church. I think that her fear and guilt over these things made her a very angry person. Although I published about fifty to sixty books by the time of her death, I don't think she ever liked the idea of me becoming a writer. She wanted me to have something tangible, like a job in a bank with a dependable weekly paycheck."3
The time Delton spent as a child on her grandparents' farm in Norwood, Minnesota became another strong influence for her.
