She also told me that we were very lucky because my father was never out of work. He had a good job with the telephone company and was there for forty-five years. In my mother's eyes this was a blessing (the longevity of it), but from old letters found after my father's death it appears he may have wanted other things. He mentions traveling to South America. This and many other dreams never happened. He gave them up for the advantage of having work in 1931 when others were jumping out of the windows of tall buildings or hanging themselves in old barns."

At age thirteen, Delton's father had been sent to a seminary in Chicago because his parents had decided he would become a priest. "However, their dream was crushed, because as he grew to college age in Chicago, he met my mother and left the seminary to marry her.
