Authors and Artists for Young Adults on Judie Angell (page 2)

Angell attended Syracuse University, and shortly after graduation in 1959 she accepted a position as a second-grade teacher in Brooklyn, New York. The author's first professional writing experiences involved composing blurbs for T.V. Guide and writing for a public television station during the 1960s. In 1964 Angell married Philip Gaberman, a music teacher and arranger specializing in pop and jazz. They moved to an old house on a lake in South Salem, New York, where they raised their two sons, Mark and Alexander. Angell has been crafting works of fiction since 1968, and her musical inspirations have included jazz artists Cleo Laine and Mel Torme, theatrical composers Stephen Sondheim and Marvin Hamlisch, pop singer/songwriter Paul Simon, and classical musician Johann Sebastian Bach.

Novels Reflect Angell's Past

Angell considers each element of her youth and early adulthood helpful in her current work as a novelist for children and young adults. While her teaching and television writing served to strengthen her skills, her childhood stories and musical background inspired many of the characters and events in her books. The author has strong memories of the powerful emotions that pre-teens and teenagers experience and believes this to be her most important asset as a writer.
